MANILA: Philippine president Gloria Macapagal Arroyo rejected calls for a ceasefire with Muslim guerillas yesterday and ordered the military to push ahead with operations on a southern island where fighting has killed more than 70 people.
In a statement, Arroyo commended the military for taking control of 45 Jolo island “lairs and sanctuaries” used by followers of jailed Muslim rebel leader Nur Misuari and the extremist group Abu Sayyaf.
