SRINAGAR (India): Nearly a week after avalanches buried villages in Kashmir, army medical teams arrived yesterday in hard-hit areas to treat the injured and dig out the dead as the death toll rose to 244.
Until now, survivors and civilian volunteers had been relying on rudimentary first aid to treat broken limbs, frostbite and other ailments, and using farm tools and bare hands to retrieve bodies since giant walls of snow slammed into the six villages last weekend.
