YANGON: Myanmar's ruling junta urged unity among the country's many ethnic groups at a Union Day ceremony yesterday, just days after police imprisoned two ethnic Shan political leaders.
Union Day commemorates the signing of a 1947 agreement between ethnic leaders and the late independence hero Gen Aung San – father of detained pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi – to resist British colonial rule. Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, won independence in 1948.
