BAGHDAD: Gunmen assassinated Baghdad's deputy police chief and a suicide bomber driving a stolen patrol car killed three people at a police station yesterday as insurgents pressed a campaign to wreck Iraq's Jan 30 election.
The attacks at morning rush hour underlined the vulnerability of Iraq's fledgling security forces, raising fresh doubts as to whether they can protect voters in the first ballot since a US-led invasion toppled dictator Saddam Hussein.
