BEIJING: The death toll from a fire at five connected iron ore mines in northern China rose to 57 yesterday after more bodies were lifted out of the smoke-filled shafts, as those in charge of the operation were detained.
The fire started on Saturday in a privately run mine in Shahe city, Hebei province and rapidly spread to four other mines nearby, trapping 106 people working underground, the Xinhua news agency reported.
