BANGKOK: Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra yesterday snubbed a request by a UN expert on extrajudicial killings to look into the deaths of 85 Muslim protesters in Tak Bai, saying the government was uncomfortable with the move.
Philip Alston, the special rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions for the UN Commission for Human Rights, said yesterday he was concerned about the deaths in Tak Bai on Oct 25 and about reports that up to 40 people are still unaccounted for. He had asked to visit the country to assess the situation in the south.
