BEIJING: China has for the first time approved laws that allow foreigners to apply for permanent residence, or green cards, state media reported yesterday.
The legislation took effect on August 15 after getting the go ahead by the State Council, Ministry of Public Security spokesman Hao Chiyong was cited as saying by the Xinhua news agency.
This is a significant move by the Chinese government to adapt to economic globalisation, push forward reform and opening-up and the modernization of socialism still further ..., said Hao.
Eligibility for permanent residence mainly applies to high-level foreign personnel. AFP
