Council under graft probePADANG (Indonesia): All 25 members of an Indonesian town council have been placed under investigation for corruption, police said yesterday.
The members of Payakumbuh council and its secretary and treasurer are suspected of misusing funds totalling 1.03bil rupiah (RM410,000), said provincial police spokesman Langgo Simalango. – AFP
Ex-strongman Thanom diesBANGKOK: Field Marshal Thanom Kittikachorn, a Thai army strongman blamed for a bloody crackdown on student-led democracy protests in the early 1970s, has died at the age of 93.
Thanom passed away late Wednesday at a private hospital here where he had been treated since January after suffering from brain haemorrhage and diabetes, hospital officials said. – Reuters

Hotel accused of discriminationBANGKOK: Thai AIDS activists accused a hotel here yesterday of discriminating against HIV-positive people, just three weeks before some 20,000 delegates are to converge here for a global forum on the virus.
The activists said staff at the unidentified four-star hotel had moved people with HIV who were at a conference on HIV-AIDS it hosted this month to a single, isolated floor and cordoned off a dining area to separate them from other guests. – AFP
Old robber in bracelet snatchHONG KONG: An elderly robber walking with a cane snatched a gold bracelet from a 90-year-old woman who mistook him as a friendly neighbour, a newspaper and police said yesterday.
The victim, identified by police only by her surname, Cheuk, suffered minor injuries to her wrist but refused to go to the hospital, said police spokesman Carrie So. The elderly outlaw remains at large, she said. – AP
