DILI: East Timor celebrated the second anniversary of its independence yesterday with a display of pomp and pageantry overshadowed by abject poverty in the world's newest nation and a bruising oil dispute with Australia.
To the tune of a marching band, platoons of newly-trained East Timorese troops braved sweltering heat to parade before their president, Xanana Gusmao, at a rundown stadium here.
