TAIPEI: Taiwan's leader tried to soothe rival China's suspicions that he's pushing the island toward formal independence, delivering an inaugural speech yesterday that sympathised with Beijing's demands while defending his policies that anger the communist giant.
As a steady drizzle soaked his suit jacket, President Chen Shui-bian avoided much of the China-bashing rhetoric he used to get narrowly re-elected two months ago in a vote that was still being disputed by the opposition.
