SINGAPORE: A leading civil rights activist and opposition politician said yesterday that an appeal to lift his bankruptcy status has been blocked by Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong and other ruling party politicians.
The failed appeal means that former opposition lawmaker Joshua “J.B.'' Jeyaretnam, 78, will probably miss the next general election, due by 2007. He missed the last contest three years ago after being declared bankrupt the same year. – AP
