DHAKA: Supporters of Bangladesh's main opposition Awami League staged sit-ins yesterday ahead the party's end-of-the month deadline for the resignation of the government as police kept up mass arrests.
Police said 7,000 people had been arrested in Dhaka since Monday in what authorities described as a bid to check rampant crime but the opposition said it was part of a government drive to crack down on rival parties.
