TAIPEI: Taiwan's leader sent a sweet-and-sour message to rival China yesterday, making a rare public admission that he would like to search for his Chinese roots and blasting the mainland as an “authoritarian empire” that will eventually fall.
President Chen Shui-bian's comments about his ancestral ties to China were unusual because he usually portrays himself as a “son of Taiwan” and downplays his family's connection to the mainland.
