MANILA: The southern island of Basilan may be cordoned off as part of a massive manhunt for Muslim militants who staged a jailbreak, Philippine president Gloria Arroyo said yesterday.
On Saturday, more than 50 inmates, led by suspected Abu Sayyaf guerillas, used a smuggled pistol to flee from a jail in the provincial capital of Isabela – the latest in a series of stunning escapes by suspected terrorists that has embarrassed one of Washington's strongest anti-terror allies.
