THE number of overweight people in China has topped 200 million, and at least 30 million of them are obese.
Li Chunsheng, a doctor with Xiyuan Hospital, which is affiliated to the Chinese Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine, said that obesity was more common among people over the age of 50.
Doctor Li said that obesity had also become a serious disease threatening the lives of Beijingers, especially primary and middle school students.
The number of obese children in Beijing had climbed to 18.2% in 2002 from 10.6% in 1991.
The doctor warned that obesity increased the risk of developing high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes.
“The life expectancy of people who are overweight by 30% is four years shorter than that of normal persons.”
However, he said that binge eating and dieting that lad to repeated increases and decreases in weight was also harmful.
Some experts suggest that people give up lifestyles that lead to obesity and do more exercise. – People’s Daily
