TAIPEI: Taiwan took a first step towards halving its brawling parliament yesterday in a move backed by both contenders in the island's hotly contested presidential election as underscoring their political reform credentials.
The reform, aimed to make the legislature more efficient, made unexpected headway in a parliament committee late on Wednesday with just days to go before a March 20 election that that could be decided by a few hundred thousand votes out of an electorate of 16 million.
