BAGHDAD: The United States moved yesterday to speed up the handover of power to the Iraqis by mid-2004, amid an alarming surge of violence that left another four more Americans dead despite a new US offensive to quell resistance to the occupation.
The Iraqi capital was shaken by a pre-dawn loud explosion, but the cause was still not clear and a US military spokesman said the blast may be part of Operation Iron Hammer targeting insurgents' hideouts.
