NEW DELHI: A 12-year-old boy was kidnapped and shot dead in the northern Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir for writing a love letter to the sister of a suspected Muslim militant, it was reported yesterday.

Zubair Ahmad Mir was a class eight student in Punjwa in Kupwara, about 90km northwest of Srinagar – the summer capital of Kashmir.

He took a fancy to a girl in his neighbourhood and last month mustered up the courage to give her a letter.

This enraged the girl's brother Farooq Ahmad Mir, a suspected Muslim militant, who allegedly kidnapped the boy and shot him, the Indian Express newspaper reported.

When the local army unit heard of the incident they burned down the militant's house.

One villager said, “Now the case has taken a different turn. We had protested against the murder but when the army burnt down the militant's house, it became an issue between the militants and the army. The entire village now feels scared.”

Senior Superintendent of Police Gareeb Das said, “I can't believe the militant killed this little boy on such a trivial issue. It is a pathetic story. The boy was an orphan.” – dpa
