COLOMBO: Sri Lanka's political crisis deepened yesterday as President Chandrika Kumaratunga declared a state of emergency and fears grew for the fragile peace process with Tamil Tiger rebels.
The president's office announced the state of emergency, which gives sweeping powers to the security forces to make arrests, but reassured the international community that a ceasefire with the rebels would be respected.
