JAKARTA: A retired major general became the first senior military officer to go on trial for gross human rights violations linked to a massacre of Muslim protesters here 19 years ago.
Pranowo, 62, had been a colonel heading the Jakarta military police when soldiers opened fire on Muslim demonstrators at the Tanjung Priok port on Sept 12, 1984, killing at least 14 people.
