NEW DELHI: India's most populous state was in a political crisis when its top elected official resigned yesterday, a day after her party called off its alliance with Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's party.
Chief Minister Mayawati of Uttar Pradesh state said she quit because opposition parties had accused her of clinging to power though her party had lost majority support in the state legislature.
