MORE than 60,000 red T-shirts have been snapped up for charity as Singaporeans heeded a government call to wear red as they celebrate the city-state's 38th independence day on Saturday.

Organisers of this year's National Day Parade have called on Singaporeans to dress in red when they turn out at the national stadium for the colourful annual spectacle.

Community Chest, a charity umbrella group, saw an opportunity to raise funds by commissioning specially designed red T-shirts to be sold at S$8 (RM17.20) each, with 25% going to projects for the less fortunate.

A total of 140,000 T-shirts went on sale on June 1 and they will be available until Aug 31. National Day collar pins are also on sale for S$2 (RM4.30) each. – AFP
