Landslides and flash floods kill 27 in Nepal

KATHMANDU: At least 27 people were killed, many as they slept, on Thursday and 27 more were missing after landslides and flash floods swept parts of Nepal, officials said.

Home ministry official Lekhnath Pokharel said 22 people had died when landslides triggered by heavy monsoon rains swept away several houses in Manakamana.

“The victims were caught while they were sleeping,” another official said.

Pokharel said four people died in Chitaun and one in the Nawalparai district.

Landslides and flash floods also hit southern Nepal, where 27 people were reported missing, he added. – Reuters
