Indon cops jail abused wife

JAKARTA: Police have jailed an abused wife for allegedly stealing from her husband to finance their children's needs, news reports said yesterday.

Jakarta police jailed Priescilla Malingkas a week ago after her husband turned her in for allegedly stealing 10 million rupiah (RM4,500) in cash from him and pawning their piano and television set, said The Jakarta Post

The same police station ignored her complaint last month of being beaten with a pipe by her husband, known as Ahu, after she questioned his purchases of a VCD player and desktop computer.

“It is ironic that my client, who reported her husband for physical abuse, is now being detained for stealing from him,” said Simanjuntak, Malingkas' lawyer.

Malingkas, who said Ahu had not given the family any money for the past three years, has appealed for help from the National Commission for Violence Against Women and the National Commission for Children's Protection. – dpa
