BEIJING: China, fearful that SARS could sweep through its countryside, has ordered rural authorities to prepare to renovate their dilapidated hospitals and health facilities, the official Xinhua news agency said.
The Construction Ministry said in an “emergency circular” that a widespread lack of awareness and the rural areas' underdeveloped healthcare system, where 70% of China's 1.3 billion people live, could help the spread of SARS.
