AN ARCHAEOLOGICAL excavation at Padang has turned up artefacts to support the theory that there was already an ancient city teeming with trade in Singapore as early as the 14th century.
Numerous artefacts, including Chinese coins from the Tang (AD 618-907) and Sung (AD 760-1279) dynasties, porcelain shards from the Yuan (AD 1260-1368) dynasty and beads from India, have been dug up from a 4.5m by 2m patch of ground just outside the Singapore Cricket Club.
