SARS fund to help cover lost income

THE Courage Fund will provide financial help to self-employed people and those whose incomes are hit because of SARS.

To encourage them to come forward and be checked for SARS, the fund will give up to S$70 (RM154) a day to those who have to be warded for observation or treatment.

Financial aid will also be given to those who are ordered to be quarantined at home, the Health Ministry said on Sunday.

It was the first time that the authorities have revealed how the national fund-raising effort, named in honour of healthcare workers, will be used to help those affected by the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome.

The announcement followed the ministry’s appeal on Saturday for all who have come down with fever or have other symptoms of muscle ache, cough or difficulty in breathing, after visiting the Pasir Panjang Wholesale Market between April 5 and April 19, to get checked up. – The Straits Times/Asia News Network
