TOKYO: Nationalist Tokyo governor Shintaro Ishihara ended months of speculation that he might soon run for prime minister by announcing yesterday he would seek re-election.
The loss of a strong potential challenger is good news for incumbent Junichiro Koizumi, whose popularity – his strongest weapon against opposition forces inside his ruling party – has recently fallen below 50%.
