JAKARTA: Former Indonesian military chief General Wiranto yesterday defended himself against charges of crimes against humanity in East Timor, committed when the territory was still part of Indonesia in 1999.
I dare testify before all Indonesians that I, as the defence minister during the popular consultation (vote) in East Timor, never thought about, or even ordered crimes such as murder, torture, abduction and expulsion, Wiranto told a press conference here.
