SEOUL, South Korea (AP) - The United States extended the tours of duty Monday for 2,800 U.S. soldiers in South Korea to maintain a credible deterrent against communist North Korea as focus shifts to a potential U.S.-led attack on Iraq.
The move comes amid mounting North Korean criticism of upcoming joint U.S.-South Korean military drills that Pyongyang accuses of "escalating the military threat'' toward the North and sabotaging reconciliation projects with the South.
