THE Health Ministry has banned the sale of human breast milk, an official in central China's Hunan Province said.
The ban followed a move on Jan 26 by a restaurant in Changsha, capital of Hunan, to put 12 dishes made from the breast milk of six women in the province's mountainous areas on its menu.
The incident triggered a heated dispute on the marketing of breast milk products across the country, forcing the restaurant to suspend the making of the offensive dishes.
Huang Jinsong, an official with the Hunan provincial health department, said the ministry had made it clear that “breast milk cannot be taken as merchandise or traded for profit”.
He said selling breast milk was a violation of human ethics because it would deprive some babies of their right to be breast-fed by their mothers.
Besides, it is hard to conduct quality control on the “production, transportation, preservation, processing and trade of the milk”, he said.
Restaurants found using breast milk products would be severely punished, he said. – People's Daily
