Driving ban and fine for Tony Leung

ACTOR Tony Leung Ka Fai has been banned from driving for 18 months and fined HK$12,000 (RM5,904) at Eastern Court on Wednesday for drink driving and assaulting a bus driver.

Leung, 44, was found to be more than four times over the allowed alcohol limit, when his car was involved in a three-vehicle crash on the Hunghom side of the Cross-Harbour Tunnel on Nov 9.

He then punched 43-year-old bus driver Chong Pui-kin, who was also involved in the accident, after an argument, the court heard.

Andrew Lam, representing Leung, described the actor as a good family man whose greatest pleasure in life was driving his two daughters to school every day.

Lam said Leung acted out of character on that day because he was under the influence of alcohol. He blamed the bad economy for Leung’s erratic behaviour, saying the actor was stressed by the fear of job security.

Leung, who had been to a friend’s birthday party on the night of the accident, is among a few local actors to have made an impression internationally.

His latest film “Double Vision” has been shown in several countries.

He made his name outside Hong Kong with “The Lover” in the early 1990s.
