BEIJING: New Chinese Communist Party chief Hu Jintao has begun to consolidate power, with key allies set to take over as mayor in Beijing and Shanghai and as governor in two major provinces, sources said yesterday.
Hu still lives in the shadow of Jiang Zemin, his predecessor as party general secretary, but has been eager to make his mark since taking over in a generational leadership change in November the Communists’ first orderly succession since 1949.
