DHAKA: Homeless people scrambled for handouts of warm clothing and blankets as the death toll from a three-week cold spell in Bangladesh and India reached 646, officials and news reports said yesterday.
As biting winds swept down from the Himalayas, the reported toll in Bangladesh increased to 421 as Dhakas Ittefaq and Jugantar newspapers said 100 people, most of them children and elderly people, died on Thursday in northern Bangladesh.
