TOKYO: Thieves used bulldozers or backhoe diggers to literally smash and grab 57 automated teller machines (ATMs) to steal cash last year, up from just nine similar cases the previous year, police said yesterday.
In all, about 335 million yen (RM10.7mil) was stolen in such a fashion last year, the National Police Agency (NPA) said in a special report. Comparative figures for the amount stolen in 2001 were not available.
