Previously uncontactable Malaysian returns home safely from Nepal, says Foreign Ministry

PETALING JAYA: A Malaysian previously reported uncontactable following floods and landslides in Nepal has returned safely to Malaysia, but 54 others remain listed as uncontactable.

The Foreign Ministry said the Malaysian presented himself at the Embassy of Malaysia in Kathmandu on Oct 1, where his identity was verified and he was confirmed to be safe.

He returned to Malaysia on Oct 2.

The ministry said relevant authorities would record his statement to complete the official record and he would also undergo a health assessment.

It added that the Malaysian Embassy in Kathmandu was conducting further verification with Nepalese authorities and reviewing relevant records following the development.

"With his status now confirmed, the Ministry's record stands at 54 Malaysians reported as uncontactable," it said in a statement on Saturday (Oct 3).

The ministry said it would continue to verify each case separately based on information obtained through relevant authorities and available channels.

It also said no further personal details about the Malaysian who returned would be disclosed out of respect for his privacy.

Meanwhile, the ministry said it continued to monitor developments in Nepal following the official announcement by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority on Sept 30 that search and rescue operations had concluded and transitioned to search and recovery efforts.

"This transition does not end Malaysia's efforts to verify the status of all 54 Malaysians currently reported as uncontactable," it said.

Malaysia would continue verification through its embassies in Kathmandu and Beijing, engagement with relevant authorities and other official channels.

The ministry would also follow legal and administrative processes being developed in Nepal concerning documentation and procedures for disaster victims who remain uncontactable.

It said verified developments concerning individual cases would be communicated directly to the immediate next of kin.
