JOHOR BARU: The Home Ministry will facilitate border crossing for outstation voters, particularly Johoreans working in Singapore, to return home and cast their ballots in the upcoming state election, says Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.
However, the Home Minister said the measures to be implemented would depend on the key election dates to be announced by the Election Commission (EC) following its meeting this Friday (June 12).
"We will wait for the EC meeting. Usually, after the meeting, (EC) will announce the nomination day, campaign period and polling day.
"The Home Ministry, especially the Immigration Department and related agencies, will respond based on that announcement," he told reporters after an event at Pusat Latihan Teknologi Batu Pahat on Tuesday (June 9).
Saifuddin Nasution said the choice of polling day would have different implications for cross-border travel between Johor and Singapore.
He added that the ministry would do its best to ease the voting process for Johoreans.
He had been asked if special arrangements, including possible fast-lane facilities at border checkpoints, would be introduced to help Johoreans working in Singapore return to vote.
Johor’s state legislative assembly was dissolved on June 1, paving the way for the 16th state election.
