BUTTERWORTH: The National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP) is urging the government to reinstate the 300-litre Budi95 subsidised petrol quota for teachers.
NUTP president Aminuddin Awang (pic) said this was because teachers commonly use their own vehicles to ferry students for co-curricular activities.
"On a daily basis, teachers drive students to various co-curricular activities – inter-district or even nationally.
"This means they drive students for school-related activities using their own vehicles and subsidised petrol quota.
"We hope the government takes this into consideration and it would be welcome in conjunction with Teacher's Day on May 16," he said after an NUTP appreciation ceremony for teachers held at the Al-Ansar hall in Seberang Jaya, Penang on Friday (May 15).
Aminuddin said NUTP is championing for the Federal Government to enact a teacher's protection law.
"This is to ensure that teachers are protected from legal action by parents while carrying out their work and responsibilities," he said.
He said such situations tend to arise when teachers, in their role as educators, discipline students.
He also said NUTP joined the UNI-Malaysia Labour Centre (UNI-MLC) in April 2026.
"Its (UNI-MLC) establishment is aimed at strengthening the voice of Malaysian workers at national and international levels and fighting for the rights, welfare and well-being of all workers," he said.
Aminuddin said the challenges faced by educators require a more united, progressive and competitive trade union movement.
"Cross-sectoral cooperation through platforms such as UNI-MLC strengthens solidarity between workers and ensures that the voice of workers continues to be defended consistently and effectively," he said.
