SHAH ALAM: Two drug mule attempts were thwarted after suspicious luggage was flagged by authorities at Kuala Lumpur International Airport, police revealed.
Selangor police chief Comm Datuk Shazeli Kahar said millions of suspected marijuana buds were seized in two separate incidents in late April.
He said that in the first case on April 28, four foreigners aged between 18 and 27 were detained after four bags were flagged at Terminal One.
“Checks showed that the bags had 67.2kg of suspected marijuana buds kept in plastic bags. The drugs were worth about RM5.4mil.
“Three of the suspects tested positive for drugs. All have been remanded for further investigation,” he told a press conference at the state police contingent headquarters here yesterday.
In the second incident at the same location on April 30, a 20-year-old foreigner was detained after two of his bags were flagged following a security scan.
“Checks showed 59 packs of suspected ganja buds weighing 29.5kg, estimated to be worth RM2.4mil. The suspect tested positive for drugs and is under remand,” Comm Shazeli said.
A follow-up raid was conducted at a house in Kota Warisan where two foreigners were nabbed.
Four more bags with about 60kg of suspected marijuana buds were seized, with the dugs worth RM4.8mil.
Comm Shazeli said investigations showed that all the drug mules were trying to fly out and were paid “exorbitant fees” per trip.
In total, he said police seized approximately 156.7kg of drugs from the two incidents, with the value estimated at RM12.6mil.
“The mules were paid in foreign currencies. The payment for this trip was around £5,000 (RM26,546.81),” he said, adding that the drugs were believed to have been sourced from a neighbouring country.
“I advise people not to allow themselves to become drug mules and to refuse any request to carry other people’s baggage without knowing the full contents.
“Do not be swayed by high payments because it will lead to serious legal implications.”
