Teenager claims trial to dangerous driving and causing death of cyclist

KUCHING: A teenager has pleaded not guilty in the Magistrate's Court here to a charge of dangerous driving and causing the death of a 56-year-old cyclist.

The accused, Elijah Jeremiah Yeo Shi Xian, 19, made the plea before Magistrate Nursyaheeqa Nazwa Radzali.

He was accused of driving dangerously and colliding with a cyclist, causing death, at Jalan Stutong here at 5.30am on May 1.

The charge was brought under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which provides for imprisonment of not less than five years and not more than ten years, as well as a maximum fine of RM50,000.

A conviction would also lead to disqualification from holding a driving licence for a period of not less than five years and cancellation of the licence if holding a probationary driving licence.

The court allowed the accused to be released on bail of RM20,000 with two sureties and set June 5 for case management.

The prosecution was conducted by deputy public prosecutor Mohd Fillanny Siji, while the accused was represented by lawyer Daniel Ling.

On May 1, Kuching police chief Asst Comm Alexson Naga Chabu reported that a male cyclist had died after being struck by a vehicle in an early morning accident on Jalan Stutong.

Police, who received a report regarding the accident at 5.43 am, stated that the victim, aged 56, sustained severe head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. – Bernama
