Teen driver claims trial to hit-and-run case that killed cyclist

KUCHING: A teenager has pleaded not guilty to driving recklessly in a hit-and-run case, which killed a cyclist last Friday (May 1).

The 19-year-old was charged in the Magistrate's Court here on Wednesday (May 6) for reckless driving causing death under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act.

Magistrate Nursyaheeqa Nazwa Radzali fixed June 23 for pre-trial case management.

The court allowed the accused to be released on a bail of RM20,000 with two sureties.

It also ordered him to report to the nearest police station once a month.

DPP Mohd Fillanny Siji prosecuted while the accused was represented by counsel Daniel Ling.

In the May 1 incident, a 56-year-old cyclist was hit at 5.43am on Jalan Stutong by a vehicle which fled the scene.

The victim was pronounced dead by paramedics at 6.30am.

The driver turned himself in at Kuching district police headquarters at noon on Tuesday (May 5).
