Bukit Aman: Nearly 13% rise in commercial crime cases in Q1, slight dip in total losses


KUALA LUMPUR: Commercial Crime cases spiked by 12.89% in the first three months of this year compared to the same period last year, says Bukit Aman.

Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) director Comm Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa said 57,260 cases were reported in the first quarter last year, against 64,643 this year.

"However, the total losses saw a slight reduction from RM787mil last year to RM764mil this year.

"We also recorded an increased in prosecutions, from 4,525 cases last year to 5,140 cases this year," he told reporters on Tuesday (May 5).

He added that a total of 7,084 commercial crime suspects were detained last year against 7,190 this year.

Of the overall commercial crime cases, online scams caused the highest amount of losses, he said.

"During the first three months of this year, 16,680 cases were recorded with RM555.78mil in losses," he said.

Losses from investment scams came to RM246.7mil for the quarter, Comm Rusdi added.
