Successful cloud seeding operations bring rain to Melaka, Johor

KUALA LUMPUR: Cloud seeding operations conducted in Melaka and Johor from Monday (April 20) until Thursday (April 23) have successfully generated significant rainfall in several targeted areas.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said daily rainfall of between two and 24 millimetres (mm) was recorded in Melaka, while Johor saw between five and 40mm.

Ahmad Zahid, who also chairs the Central Disaster Management Committee, said the operation was carried out at eight dams and two water treatment plants in Melaka on Monday and Tuesday (April 21), before continuing in Johor on April 22 & 23.

"For the third series in Johor, the operation focused on key dam catchment areas, including Machap, Upper Layang, Lower Layang, Pulai and Lebam dams, as well as the Lok Heng cluster and Bukit Waha in Kota Tinggi.

"The operation was conducted by a Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) aircraft which took off from the Subang Air Base and was completed in under three hours, covering several identified target zones,” he said in a Facebook post.

He added that favourable atmospheric conditions throughout the operation period contributed to more effective cloud formation and rainfall.

Ahmad Zahid said close coordination between the Malaysian Meteorological Department, the RMAF and the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) played a key role in ensuring the operation’s success.

He noted that the initiative reflects the government’s ongoing commitment to safeguarding the sustainability of national water resources, particularly amid increasingly unpredictable weather patterns.

"Insya Allah, we will continue to monitor the situation and strengthen efforts to ensure the country’s preparedness and water resource management remain at the highest level,” he said. – Bernama
