Postpone Sukma until Middle East crisis ends, says Selangor Ruler

SHAH ALAM: Selangor Ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has suggested that the Malaysia Games (Sukma), scheduled to be held in Selangor this year, be postponed.

In his royal address at the opening of the first meeting of the fourth session of the 15th Selangor State Legislative Assembly on Monday (April 20), the Ruler said he understood that the financial allocation needed to host the event was significant.

"Given the current economic situation, I am of the view that it would be more appropriate to postpone the event until the Middle East crisis is resolved and until Shah Alam Stadium is fully completed.

"At the same time, I am also directing for the Sultan of Selangor Cup, the annual football match between Selangor and Singapore, for 2026 be cancelled," said the Ruler.

However, Sultan Sharafuddin added that he wished for a Silver Jubilee Cup inter-district football tournament to be organised in Selangor for students under the age of 15 years old as an effort to nurture young talent and to cultivate a grassroots sporting spirit.

"Furthermore, football is the most popular sport among the people of Selangor," said His Royal Highness.
