Motorcyclist killed in Tawau crash

KOTA KINABALU: A 29-year-old motorcyclist was killed in a collision with a four-wheel-drive (4WD) vehicle in Tawau on Sunday (March 29).

Tawau OCPD Asst Comm Jasmin Hussin said the motorcyclist sustained serious injuries and was confirmed dead by medical officers while receiving treatment at the scene of the accident along Jalan Airport Baru, at about 2.30pm.

He said initial police investigations showed that the 4WD, driven by a 45-year-old man, was heading from Sin On towards Tawau airport when the motorcyclist is believed to have cut into his path from the left.

"The driver was unable to avoid the motorcycle and struck it on its right side.

"As a result, the motorcyclist and his motorcycle were thrown into the opposite lane before falling into a drain," ACP Jasmin said, adding that the driver was unhurt.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless or dangerous driving causing death.

ACP Jasmin advised all road users, especially motorcyclists, to ensure traffic conditions are safe before exiting junctions or entering main roads, to avoid accidents that could endanger themselves and other road users.
