Two million vehicles to flood Penang roads


GEORGE TOWN: Some two million vehicles are expected to enter Penang during Ops Selamat 25 from Feb 15 to Feb 20 for the Chinese New Year.

State police chief Comm Datuk Azizee Ismail said the figure would exceed last year’s 1.8 million vehicles.

During the six-day Ops Selamat, he said 380 officers and personnel from Penang’s Traffic Investi­gation and Enforcement Depart­ment will be deployed to ensure smooth traffic movement.

“The operation also involves the Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department, which will deploy 350 patrol units with other agencies such as the Road Transport Department and local authorities,” he said here yesterday, Bernama reported.

In KEDAH, some 300,000 vehicles are expected to enter the Kota Setar district during the Chinese New Year.

District police chief Asst Comm Syed Basri Syed Ali said five officers and 43 personnel from the district police headquarters would be deployed throughout Ops Selamat 25.

In KUCHING, Sarawak police will deploy 850 personnel statewide through Ops Selamat.

Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mohamad Zainal Abdullah said there was an increase of 17 fatal accident cases so far this year, with driver negligence one of the main causes.
