Cigarette toss lands worker in court

ALOR SETAR: An Indonesian construction worker was fined RM300 and ordered to perform six hours of community service by the Sessions Court here after pleading guilty to a littering offence.

Judge N. Priscilla Hemamalini imposed the sentence on Jufri Zulkifli, 39, who admitted to discarding a cigarette butt in a public area.

The offence was committed around 12.10am on Jan 1 at the Alor Setar Tower, Bernama reported.

The court ordered Jufri to carry out the six hours of community service at the rate of one hour per day over a period of two months.

Jufri, who is from Aceh, is the first person to be prosecuted for littering in Kedah under Section 77A of the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Act 2007 (Act 672),

The offence carries a maximum fine of RM2,000, as well as a community service order of up to 12 hours within a period not exceeding six months, as determined by the court.

During mitigation, Jufri told the court that he earns RM80 a day as a construction worker and supports his mother and child.
