Umno veeps: Focus on Malay unity, not fear of other parties

KUALA LUMPUR: While Umno should not fear entering into political cooperation, parties must be mindful of their words against Umno, says its vice-presidents.

Vice-president Datuk Seri Johari Ghani said instead of being overly concerned about Umno’s political collaboration, members should focus on strengthening Malay unity.

He pointed out that it would be hard for the party to help the people if it has little representation in the government.

“This is the future of politics. We do not need to be afraid of anyone. Why should we fear DAP? If we were never afraid of Gerakan, MCA or any non-Malay based parties, why should we be afraid of them?

“What we should fear is when the Malays cannot unite,” he said.

Vice-president Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail said parties in the current administration must refrain from making rude and disrespectful statements that can hurt the feelings of Umno members.

“Umno has never interfered in the internal affairs of other parties. We do not intrude into your house, so do not ever attempt to enter and try to destroy ours. Our patience has its limits, our tolerance has its boundaries. Our respect also has its limits.

“If others treat us well, we are equally capable of returning that kindness. But if anyone intends to do harm to us, we know how to retaliate a thousand times over.”

Wan Rosdy pointed to president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s speech, which reminded parties in the unity government to respect Umno, a party that represents the interests of the Malays and Islam.

Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, who is also a vice-president, said Umno must make up ground to also become the kingmaker in the national political landscape.

“We have proven ourselves to be trusted allies and must be in the position where no government can be formed without us.

“We are the glue that holds Malaysia together while staying true to its principles,” he said.
