DESPITE losing his right arm in an accident nine years ago, Mohammad Ariff Izzuddin Azmi refused to depend on others or seek handouts.

Instead, the 27-year-old, better known as Kay, relied on his skills and determination as a motorcycle mechanic to earn pocket money for school, and eventually opening his own workshop six years ago.

Hailing from Plentong, Johor, Kay said he decided to take control of his own life after realising the challenges of being accepted and securing employment due to his condition.

“I was born normal but I lost my right arm after a road accident on my way home.

“I was unconscious for three days and when I woke up, my parents told me that my arm had been amputated,” he said, reported Harian Metro.

Adjusting to life with only one arm was initially challenging, with Kay likening himself to “a baby again” as he had to relearn basic skills such as eating, drinking and dressing.

“I received a lot of encouragement from my family. The doctor told me I could be discharged early if I was able to manage things on my own, so I pushed myself.

“Even the doctor was surprised by my progress,” he said.

It took him almost two years to develop his skills as a mechanic.
