Armed Forces to focus on enhancing governance

KUALA LUMPUR: The Armed Forces will focus on corrective measures and improvements in an orderly, fact-based manner to strengthen governance within its ranks.

It said a committee consisting of the Chiefs of the Army, Air Force and Navy held a comprehensive discussion on current issues involving the military, reaffirming the unity of its top leadership in safeguarding institutional stability, governance integrity and public confidence in the nation’s defence force.

The Navy Chief is currently the acting Armed Forces Chief.

"The meeting reflected the collective resolve of senior commanders to ensure the strength and credibility of the military remain intact.

"The committee stressed that it views governance issues and any abuse of power with utmost seriousness," the Armed Forces said in a statement on Friday (Jan 16).

The council called on all parties to give the Armed Forces the necessary space to address the situation through established mechanisms and processes, cautioning against undue pressure or speculation that could undermine the transparency of these efforts.

It also urged all officers and personnel to remain united, disciplined and confident in existing enforcement processes and the legal framework.

"Any dissemination of sensitive information must be carried out through lawful channels," it said.

Reiterating its firm stance, the council said the military would not compromise on any form of non-compliance with the law, regulations, or core service values, and is confident that all issues will be addressed fairly, transparently and professionally through appropriate mechanisms.

The council emphasised the importance of preserving the integrity of the Armed Forces as a key national security institution entrusted with defending the country’s sovereignty.

It added that a balanced, principled and law-based approach is crucial to ensuring justice without undermining the stability of a strategic national institution.

Respecting the public’s freedom to express views responsibly as part of democratic practice, the council cautioned that unverified and speculative information could lead to confusion and misinterpretation, potentially harming the image of the military.

"The council also gives its assurance that the Armed Forces will continue to stand as a professional, credible and integrity-driven defence institution, steadfast in its commitment to safeguarding Malaysia’s sovereignty and security without compromise," the statement read.
