Syariah offier, syarie lawyer remanded in 'hibah' bribery probe

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Johor has remanded a syariah officer and a syarie lawyer on suspicion of soliciting and accepting about RM91,000 in bribes for issuing a hibah (gift) confirmation order to facilitate property ownership transfer.

Magistrate Ahmad Khairuddin Khalid allowed the two suspects to be remanded for seven days until Jan 20 following an application by the MACC at the Johor Baru Sessions Court on Wednesday (Jan 14) morning.

According to a source, the two male suspects, aged in their 40s and 50s, were arrested separately yesterday when they appeared to give statements at the Johor MACC office at around 8pm.

"Initial investigations revealed that the two suspects had conspired to commit the offence between 2016 and 2018.

"The two suspects are believed to have received cash from 13 hibah recipients, with each paying about RM7,000,” the source said.

Meanwhile, Johor MACC director Hairuzam Mohmad Amin@Hamim, when contacted, confirmed the arrests and said the case was being investigated under Section 16(a)(B) of the MACC Act 2009.- Bernama
